Avenue Utd 3
Shannon Town 2
Gary O Connell ⚽⚽
Shannon Town A team travelled to Ennis on Sunday morning to take on a very strong Avenue Utd side. As expected Avenue came out flying and put the Town 11 under serious pressure for the first 20 minutes forcing some last ditch defending and some great saves from the Town keeper Shane Russell. Shannon Town could have taken the lead after 30 minutes when a great effort from Kieran Hackett when narrowly wide. On 35 minutes Avenue did take the lead with a great strike from 20 yards out which gave the Town keeper no chance. Shannon Town pushed hard for an equalizer but at halftime still found themselves 1 down.
The 2nd half started with the away side guilty of some more poor play which allowed Avenue to score their 2nd goal and make it 2-0. But for some reason or another this seemed to spark a much needed life into the Shannon Town side and they pulled one goal back with a well delivered free kick into the box by Brian Monaghan and Gary o Connell getting the final touch goalward to make it 2-1. After 70 minutes the Town got their well deserved equalizer when another free kick was delivered into the box and Gary O Connell latched onto it to make it 2-2.
But with 5 minutes remaining Town hearts were broken when Avenue scored the winner, a free kick which rebounded off the post and with the Avenue player reacting quickest to tap in from close range. A truly disappointed dressing room after the game but they will need to dust themselves off and regroup for another tricky game this Sunday 19th at home to Ennis Town.
